Dallas Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation and corrupt banks. With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank.

Urbit meetup in North Texas

Hi everybody, I'm holding a meetup in the DFW area for people interested in Urbit next month. If you're interested in the project or want to learn more about it, come hang out! Details are at the end of the post. I've got the blessing of u/ZorbaTHut to post this here contingent on explaining why Urbit is interesting, both in general and for this audience, so I'll give you a brief outline of the project if you're not familiar, and answer questions you may have once I'm home from work on Monday (though I encourage anybody else who'd like to to chime in until then -- I have to go to bed soon.)

What is Urbit?

Urbit is an interenet decentralization project, and a full networked computing stack from the ground up. Urbit's ultimate goal is to build a new internet on top of the old one, that is architecturally designed to avoid the need for centralized services by allowing individuals to run and program robust personal servers that are simple to manage. When Urbit conquers the world, your digital identity will be something you personally permanently own as a cryptographic key, not an line in a corporation's database; Facebook and Twitter will be protocols -- encrypted traffic and data shared directly between you and your friends & family, with no middlemen spying on you; your apps, social software and anything you program will have secure cryptocurrency payment mechanisms as a system call, payed out of a wallet on a device you fully control; and you will tangibly own and control your computer and the networked software you use on it.
As I said, Urbit is a stack; at its core is Nock, a minimal, turing-complete function. Nock is built out into a deterministic operating system, Arvo, with its own functional programming language. For now, Arvo runs as a process, with a custom VM/interpreter on *nix machines. Your Arvo instance talks to other instances over a native, encrypted peer-to-peer network, though it can interface with the normal internet as well. Urbit's identity management system is called Azimuth, a public key infrastructure built on Ethereum. You own proof of your Urbit instance's identity as a token in the same way you own your Bitcoin wallet.
Because the peer-to-peer network is built into Arvo, you get it 'for free' with any software you write or run on it. You run your own personal server, and run all the software you use to communicate with the world yourself. Because all of your services are running on computer you control using a single secure identity system, you can think of what it aspires to like a decentralized, cypherpunk version of WeChat -- a programmable, secure platform for everything you want to do with your computer in one place, without the downsides of other people running your software.

Why is it interesting?

Urbit is extremely ambitious and pretty strange. Why throw out the entire stack we've spent half a century building? Because it's a giant ball of mud -- millions of lines of code in the Linux kernel alone, with all the attendant security issues and complexity. You can run a personal server today if you're technically sophisticated; spin up a VPS, install all the software you need, configure everything and keep it secure. It's doable, but it sucks, and your mom can't do it. Urbit is designed from the beginning to avoid the pitfalls that led to cascading system complexity. Nock has 12 opcodes, and Arvo is somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 lines of code. The core pieces of Urbit are also ticking towards being 'frozen' -- reaching a state where they can no longer be changed, in order to ensure that they remain absolutely minimal. The point of all of this is to make a diamond-hard, unchanging core that a single person can actually understand in its entirety, ensure the security of the architecture, prevent insane dependency hell and leaky abstractions from overgrowing it, and allow for software you write today to run in a century. It also aims to be simple enough that a normal person can pay a commodity provider $5/mo (or something), log into their Urbit on their devices, and control it as easily as their phone.
Urbit's network also has a routing hierarchy that is important to understand; while the total address space is 128-bit, the addresses are partitioned into different classes. 8-bit and 16-bit addresses act as network infrastructure, while human instances use 32-bit addresses. To use the network, you must be sponsored by the 16-bit node 'above' you -- which is to say 'be on good terms'. If you aren't on good terms, that sponsorship can be terminated, but that goes both ways -- if you don't like your sponsor, you can exit and choose another. Because 32-bit addresses are finite, they're scarce and have value, which disincentivizes spam and abuse. To be clear, the sponsor nodes only sign/deliver software updates, and perform peer discovery and NAT traversal; your connections with other people are direct and encrypted. Because there are many sponsor nodes, you can return to the network if you're kicked off unfairly. In the long term, this also allows for graceful political fragmentation of the network if necessary.
The world created by Urbit is a world where individuals control their own data and digital communities live according to their mores. It's an internet that isn't funded by mass automated surveillance and ad companies that know your health problems. It's also the internet as a frontier like it once was, at least until this one is settled. Apologies if this comes off a little true-believer-y, but this project is something I'm genuinely excited about.

For TheMotte

The world that Urbit aims to build is one not dissimilar from Scott's archipelago communism -- one of voluntaristic relations and communities, and exit in the face of conflict & coercion. It's technical infrastructure to move the internet away from the chokepoints of the major social media platforms and the concentration of political power that comes with centralized services. The seismic shifts affecting our institutions and society caused by the internet in the last decade have been commented on at length here and elsewhere, but as BTO said, you ain't seen nothin' yet. I suspect many people with a libertarian or anti-authoritarian bent would appreciate the principle of individual sovereignty over their computing and data. The project is also something I've discussed a few times with others on here, so I know there's some curiosity about it.
The original developer of Urbit is also rather well known online, especially around here. Yarvin is a pretty controversial figure, but he departed the project in early 2019.

Meetup

There's a lot more that I haven't mentioned, but I hope this has piqued your interest. If you're in DFW, you can find details of the first meetup here. There will be free pizza and a presentation about Urbit, help installing & using it (Mac & Linux only for now), as well as the opportunity to socialize. All are welcome! Feel free to bring a friend.
If you're not in North Texas but are interested, there are also other regional meetups all over the world coming up soon.

MeWe: A trip report

Among the more frequently mentioned G+ alternatives at the Google+ Mass Migration community, and others, is MeWe with over 250 mentions. The site bills itself as "The Next-Gen Social Network" and the "anti-Facebook": "No Ads, No Political Bias, No Spyware. NO BS. It is headed by professed Libertarian CEO Mark Weinstein.
As the site reveals no public user-generated content to non-members, it's necessary to create an account in order to get a full impression. I thought I'd provide an overview based on recent explorations.
This report leads of with background on the company, though readers may find the report and analysis of specific groups on the site of interest.

MeWe provide several policy-related links on the site:

A ten-item statement of principles (possibly inspired by another document, it might appear):
  1. You own your personal information & content. It is explicitly not ours.
  2. You will never receive a targeted advertisement or 3rd party content based on what you do or say online. We think that's creepy.

Press

There are a few mentions of MeWe in the press, some listed on the company's website, others via web search.

Self-reported articles

The following articles are linked directly from MeWe's Press page:
The page also lists a "Privacy Revolution Required Reading" list of 20 articles all addressing Facebook privacy gaffes in the mainstream press (Wired, TechCrunch, Fortune, Gizmodo, The Guardian, etc.).
There are further self-reported mentions in several of the company's PR releases over the years.

Other mentions

A DuckDuckGo search produces several other press mentions, including:

Technology

This section is a basic rundown of the user-visible site technology.

Mobile Web

The site is not natively accessible from a mobile Web browser as it is overlayed with a promotion for the mobile application instead. Selecting "Desktop View" in most mobile browsers should allow browser-based access.

Mobile App

There are both Android and iOS apps for MeWe. I've used neither of these, though the App store entries note:
Crunchbase cites 209,220 mobile downloads over the past 30 days (via Apptopia), an 80.78% monthly growth rate, from Google Play.

Desktop Web

Either selecting "View Desktop" or navigating with a Desktop browser to https://www.mewe.com your are presented with a registration screen, with the "About", "Privacy Bill of Rights", "MeWe Challenge", and a language selector across the top of the page. Information requested are first and last name, phone or email, and a password. Pseudonymous identities are permitted, though this isn't noted on the login screen. Returning members can use the "Member Log In" button.
The uMatrix Firefox extension reveals no third-party content: all page elements are served from mewe.com, img.mewe.com, cdn.mewe.com, or ws.mewe.com. (In subsequent browsing, you may find third-party plugins from, for example, YouTube, for videos, or Giphy, for animated GIFs.)
The web front-end is nginx. The site uses SSL v3, issued by DigiCert Inc. to Sgrouples, Inc.

Onboarding

The onboarding experience is stark. There is no default content presented. A set of unidentified icons spans the top of the screen, these turn out to be Home, Chats, Groups, Pages, and Events. New users have to, somehow, find groups or people to connect with, and there's little guidance as to how to do this.

Interface

Generally there is a three panel view, with left- and right-hand sidebars of largely navigational or status information, and a central panel with main content. There are also pop-up elements for chats, an omnipresent feature of the site.
Controls display labels on some devices and/or resolutions. Controls do not provide tooltips for navigational aid.

Features

Among the touted features of MeWe are:

Community

A key aspect of any social network is its community. Some of the available or ascertained information on this follows.

Size

Weinstein claims a "million+ following inside MeWe.com" on Twitter.
The largest visible groups appear to have a maximum of around 15,000 members , for "Awesome gifs". "Clean Comedy" rates 13,350, and the largest open political groups, 11,000+ members.
This compares to Google+ which has a staggering, though Android-registrations-inflated 3.3 billion profiles, and 7.9 million communities, though the largest of these come in at under 10 million members. It's likely that MeWe's membership is on the whole more more active than Google+'s, where generally-visible posting activity was limited to just over 9% of all profiles, and the active user base was well under 1% of the total nominal population.

Active Users

MeWe do not publish active users (e.g., MUA / monthly active users) statistics.

Groups

MeWe is principally a group-oriented discussion site -- interactions take place either between individuals or within group contexts. Virtually all discovery is group-oriented. The selection and dynamics of groups on the site will likely strongly affect user experience, so exploring the available groups and their characteristics is of interest.
"MeWe has over 60,000 open groups" according to its FAQ.
The Open groups -- visible to any registered MeWe user, though not to the general public Web -- are browsable, though sections and topics must be expanded to view the contents: an overview isn't immediately accessible. We provide a taste here.
A selection of ten featured topics spans the top of the browser. As I view these, they are:
Specific groups may appear in multiple categories.
The top Groups within these topics have, variously, 15,482, 7,738, 15,482 (dupe), 7,745, 8,223, 8,220, 1,713, 9,527, 2,716, and 1,516 members. Listings scroll at length -- the Music topic has 234 Groups, ranging in size from 5 to 5,738 members, with a median of 59, mean of 311.4, and a 90%ile of 743.5.
Below this is a grid of topics, 122 in all, ranging from Activism to Wellness, and including among them. A selected sample of these topics, with top groups listed members in (parens), follows:
To be clear: whilst I've not included every topic, I've sampled a majority of them above, and listed not an arbitrary selection, but the top few Groups under each topic.

Google+ Groups

The Google Plus expats group seems the most active of these by far.

Political Groups

It's curious that MeWe make a specific point in their FAQ that:
At MeWe we have absolutely no political agenda and we have a very straightforward Terms of Service. MeWe is for all law-abiding people everywhere in the world, regardless of political, ethnic, religious, sexual, and other preferences.
There are 403 political groups on MeWe. I won't list them all here, but the first 100 or so give a pretty clear idea of flavour. Again, membership is in (parentheses). Note that half the total political Groups memberships are in the first 21 groups listed here, the first 6 are 25% of the total.

It seems there is relatively little representation from the left wing, or even the centre, of the political spectrum. A case-insensitive match for "liberal" turns up:
Mainstream political parties are little represented, though again, the balance seems skewed searching on "(democrat|republic|gop)":
The terms "left" and "right" provide a few matches, not all strictly political-axis aligned:
Socialism and Communism also warrant a few mentions:
And there are some references to green, laboulabor parties:

Conclusion

Whilst there may not be a political agenda, there does appear to be at least a slight political bias to the site. And a distinctive skew on many other topical subjects.
Those seeking new homes online may wish to take this into account.

Of Wolves and Weasels - Day 170 - DOGE4DOGE - Very Much Wow!

Hey all! GoodShibe here!
With all of the work that we've put into our DOGEconomy, on getting people out there and working for and earning Dogecoin, sometimes it's good to pause and recognize those who have already been hard at work doing exactly that.
Very Much Wow is, to my knowledge, the only Print and online Dogecoin Magazine. I write a monthly column for them (around 800 words or so) but one of the reasons I agreed to do so (I've turned down many opportunities to write for other publications) is that I really respect the owneeditor, Birdie (1923and1939).
A passionate advocate for Dogecoin, a fantastic artist (she does much of the, frankly, stunning, art for the mag herself) and a true Shibe, Birdie has been paying Shibes out of her own pocket for months now, auctioning things off on eBay and more to keep the Magazine in the black.
It's truly a labor of love and that's why, today - as Issue number 3 launches in print and online - I want to give this month's fantastic effort a big feature spot of its own and tell you why you should not be missing out on VMW.
You can read Issue #1 online here.
And Issue #2 online here.
There's also an online-only publication called Between The Moons, which you can read here.
As you can see, these are amazing, professional-level works that truly make you say 'WOW' when you look at them (let alone hold them...! A PRINTED Dogecoin Magazine... very cool).
And this month, Birdie has chased down an incredible interview that I think you're all going to want to read.
For July's feature article she sat down for an interview with Andreas Antonopoulos, of Bitcoin fame, and in it he states, flat out, that Bitcoin will NOT be used as the day to day shopping coin in the future; it will be the save-for-your-retirement coin.
Yes folks, that's in print!
There will also be an excellent article by Dr. Robert E. McGrath who goes into detail on the kinds of communities that surround Bitcoin/Dogecoin and other coins.
You can read an earlier interview with him, from June's edition, here.
This month, Very Much Wow brought on 3 more Monthly Columnists bringing the total number to 13 regulars, all paid in DOGE and working hard to bring a fun, independent view of the community to the world.
It's an overall fantastic effort and I really believe that this Magazine is not only a must-read for us Shibes, but it's a fantastic tool to help spread Dogecoin out into the world and get people looking into it for themselves.
THE JULY ISSUE IS NOW LIVE!!
Enjoy!
Very Much Wow, indeed!

Are you a supporter of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin / Ethereum and have some reservations about EOS? Are you in DFW?
Have you ever heard things like...
  1. EOS is centralized.
  2. RAM is too expensive so there are no dApps on EOS.
  3. The ICO collected billions of dollars over a year and Block One shipped unfinished software.
  4. EOS is not stable.
Well, I brought a friend to talk to you about all that.
He knows a thing or three about this crypto / blockchain stuff.
Come join us for a fireside chat Q&A with Marshall Long.

Of Wolves and Weasels - Day 160 - DOGE4DOGE - That Awkward Phase

Hey all! GoodShibe here!
One of the key principles of the DOGE4DOGE campaign has been trying to help people remember to re-buy whatever Dogecoin that they spend and use.
I can see a whole lot of Dogecoin moving around, being given to charitable causes and whatnot but I do find myself wondering how much we're picking back up off of the exchanges once it's been dumped there.
Buy it, spend it/tip it, re-fill it.
And, yes, sometimes that's easier than others, getting into the process of buying Dogecoins can be a hassle -- especially when converting from Fiat. But considering that the vast majority of us collected here are already 'believers', taking the time to get yourself set up on an exchange (as we work to simplify the buying process) isn't all that much to ask.
Some simple ways to help contribute?
sh2003 just shared with me Cleanitsupply - a US-based company that allows you to buy home essentials (cleaning supplies and more) with Dogecoin.
This, unfortunately, only seems to serve the US - but it's a great start!
The more options we have, the more stores allowing us to buy actual, useful items (remember that request list that we built last week?) the better off we'll all be.
Find it, buy it, send your DOGEs, re-buy your DOGEs.
It's through actions like these that we can start to un-stick the gears and get our DOGEconomy rolling.
The big question, the sort of elephant in the room, that I'm sensing as of late -- especially as mining becomes more difficult -- is 'why am I converting fiat to Dogecoin if I'm just re-buying Dogecoin?'
One of the sort of interesting observations that I've had, especially as we see those early easily-gotten Dogecoin mining funds dry up from various outreach efforts, is that there's a sort of real hesitation to spend 'real' money on Dogecoin.
Again, not a criticism, just an observation.
What it puts forward is this idea that, well, it's a lot easier to spend free money. Now, to be fair, it's a criticism that's been shared amongst pretty much every other coin as well, but it's one thing that seems to be coming more pronounced with Dogecoin. I'm thinking it's because the halvenings are so frequent, the coin supplies hit so hard at first and then, well, halved -- again and again -- it made it harder for people to re-supply themselves for 'free'.
Now that it's starting to cost 'real' money to get involved, for the average person, it's not as attractive. Especially as we've yet to find our own 'killer app' that you MUST have Dogecoin to use.
This is, well, it's a symptom of our 'awkward teenage years' so to speak. You know that fun part of puberty where things don't always seem to be growing at the same rate -- some things look lop-sided and/or gangly and/or 'different'. We're in that phase where we're in the process of growing up to be whomever we're going to be as an internet currency.
Now's the time for us to get out there and get active, start working on that financial six-pack, maybe read some great books so that we'll have something interesting to talk about when other currencies come calling.
Because, like puberty, it's a fine balance of internal and external growth. The work done now can, quite literally, re-shape how you look and feel and interact with the world as an adult.
And, well, adulthood for us... it's not that far off. We're right in the middle of a metamorphosis... and big things are coming our way.
It's something we all just have to make our peace with and ride through, together.
But, since we're here, grab some DOGEs and fill up your caches - prep yourself for the next surge forward.
Because it's on the horizon.
Or maybe the atmosphere.
Dogecoin is going to the Moon.
Literally.
And it's not going to cost you a dime.
It's 9:03AM EST and we're at 82.94% of DOGEs found. Our Global Hashrate is seeing a massive spike from ~52 to ~65 Gigahashes per second and our Difficulty is also spiking from ~695 to a massive ~1275.
Looks like the multipools are back in force.

Adopt a full Reddit bitcoin node - help the network.

Help adopt a full Reddit bitcoin node - help the network.
As most know, running a full node connected to the open internet with port 8332 open helps the netwerk verify, transact and keep it stable. To be marked as a [1] Fallback node the node needs to be stable and up 24/7.
I've been spawning up some VPS nodes at my own expense to help the network, and I was wondering if Redditors would like to help with the cause. The more Mem/bandwith our node has, the better it is in supporting the network.
Proposal: I pledge that:
The cost for running a minimal node is about $10 to $20 a month. if the donations exceed this, there will simply be more nodes spawned.
So if you want to chip in - the donation address is: 1GPRcwuDfwsD9UyFdvg6BTcrccDUh5Qnoq
Anything is welcome! Let's try to make the network a little bit stronger.
Source [1] https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Fallback_Nodes
EDIT 10-dec-2013: So far so good, 0.05 BTC - so about $50 total. Putting in another $20 myself and we will be starting up a medium sized full Bitcoin node for a year at first. Will post proof and stats later.
EDIT 12-dec-2013:
A total of 0.1BTC was donated, converted to 70 Euros. I've added 30 Euro myself in the jar. I have setup 2 fast SSD provisioned nodes on the following IP addresses for the duration of (for now) 6 months.
Servers :
  • 149-210-156-37.colo.transip.net
  • 149-210-156-67.colo.transip.net
They are very fast, boot in mere seconds, and have fast connections straight to the AMS-IX backbone.
Thanks everyone so far! Donations still welcome. We need more full nodes! :)
