During the bear market there was a lot of discussion over whether it would be better to buy coin or invest in mining rigs. Here's my anecdotal example on opting for the mining route. I bought only used parts from people exiting the mining game when bitcoin was <$6k. I bought these taking a risk when mining profits were breakeven or slightly negative, but I live up north so they were used to heat the house which made it a bit more palatable at the time. The bulk of the ETH/ETC I mined was converted straight to BTC and currently I have mined almost 1BTC plus some alts I am speculating in. I had been mining on GPUs since 2013 small-scale and found a bunch of deals on kijiji. I was blown away by SMOS and HIVE OS... compared to mining LTC back in the day this is so much easier! Over the past year I've spent about $25k CAD on rigs, and accumulated 145 RX-series GPUs and 8 Vega 56's plus all the other hardware. My favourite deals were buying pre-built rigs. Currently limited by my 100 amp electrical service and running 115GPUs. I'm running 72GPUs on HIVE OS and the rest on SMOS. I haven't used HashR8 yet, but I'm thinking of splitting my farm up to run free rigs on HIVE and HasR8 and the remainder on SMOS to reduce overhead. The mine based on current profitability brings in about $70CAD/day revenue and the power cost is about $1100/month. The 115GPUs running put out about 3075MH. I estimate that these rigs will sell for significantly more than I originally paid if ETH makes another leg higher in the coming weeks. Right now selling my house and looking for upgraded 200 amp electric with 240V. Going to be setting up a secondary farm at my parent's house with the rigs I don't run at home. HIVE OS Settings for 8 x 8GB RX470 Rigs: Core: 947Mhz, Mem: 1750Mhz, Volt: 750mV, Speed: 26MH/s with these settings on an 8 card rig they are below 100W per card. I can't get quite as good performance with SMOS, it doesn't seem to like setting voltage below 800mv. Any tips on how I can reduce my power consumption and overhead costs further? I'm looking to achieve the best hash/watt possible and not chasing absolute performance. My power rate overnight is half the cost of peak rates, any thoughts on turning off the farm for the 6 hours of peak power costs? What should I mine with my Vegas? Best altcoins to mine in 2020
Monero is the currency with the highest anonymity rates, which stays attractive to many users and remains one of the strongest altcoins. The specific proof-of-work hashing algorithm does not allow ASIC-miners, so it is relatively easy to mine using personal computer’s processors and graphics cards. AMD graphic cards are preferable for this task, but NVidia suits as well. The current block reward is 2.47 XMR. Litecoin is one of the oldest Bitcoin forks, but unlike it uses a different “Script” PoW algorithm which allows less powerful GPUs to mine coins. Litecoin is on the most popular, and successful Bitcoin forks and considered one of the most stable cryptocurrencies. Block mining reward is 12.5 LTC. Ravencoin is another Bitcoin hardfork, and like Monero’s its X16R algorithm is practically unavailable for ASIC machines. Raven keeps gaining popularity for many reasons – it has faster block time, higher mining reward (5,000 RVN at the moment) and secure messaging system. Dogecoin is not a joke anymore. Hard to believe, but this currency once made for fun, became one of the most valuable ones. Like Litecoin it uses Scrypt algorithm and great for mining with GPUs. One more Bitcoin fork Bitcoin Gold was made specifically to kick out ASICs and clear the road for GPUs. It may not be the fastest-growing currency, but it is definitely one of the most stable. Why is the RandomX algorithm being hyped to the moon?
TL;DR: don't assume the average return from mining RandomX will be higher than the current CryptonightR algorithm. Hold back your excitement for now. I think we all need to bring something to our attention. Over the last month, there have been so many topics and comments here on MoneroMining about the new 'RandomX' algorithm. This algorithm is supposed to be launched a couple of months from now. There are many questions like "is this a good hashrate for my CPU"? "What's your power usage on RandomX"? "How can I tune my CPU for RandomX"? "How would the algorithm perform on this hardware"? I think these are great constructive comments that are at the heart of what miners stand for. We miners love optimizing our rigs and educating ourselves on technological trends. But I've noticed many questions such as "what parts should I buy for a RandomX mining rig"? "Is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900x a good investment"? "What parts will give me the most profit when RandomX launches"? Many of these questions are asked with very little research. I think there's a gold fever brewing behind some of these comments. The kind of motives that have bankrupted many miners in the past bubbles. As we have seen in 2014 and 2018, anybody who enters the crypto industry with an 'I want easy profit' attitude almost always goes bankrupt. They buy coins or hardware at the peak of the bubble. Sometimes they get lucky and sell their coins or rigs right before the crash (only to get burned in a future bubble later). But most of the time, these new users lose most of their investment. As a veteran miner, a lot of alarm bells ring in my head when I read these kinds of RandomX hype posts. I have no reason to think CPU mining will be more profitable on RandomX than on the current CryptonightR.
If the new AMD CPUs are very efficient on RandomX, that just means more people will buy them, driving up the difficulty. Your shiny R9 3900x's profit will start falling because it's no longer as competitive against the other hardware on the network.
If the profits on day 1 of the RandomX launch are indeed high, more people will start adding rigs to the network. If the average miner's profit is above the equilibrium of the market, it will start going down. That equilibrium is largely set by botnets, large scale farms in China/Russia/Niagara Falls/Georgia, and datacenters with spare capacity. So if your R9 3900x earns $10/day on day 1, you can count on that golden streak ending soon.
CPU mining as a market is never stable. Your CPU rig is limited tojust 1 or 2 coins: Monero and Veruscoin. Edit: there are a few more CPU coins than these. AMD GPUs can at least mine 3 or 4 coins well, while nVidia GPUs are the best at 5-10 different algorithms. GPU mining is a safer, less risky investment. GPU mining is like playing blackjack. Building a rig specifically for CPU mining is like tossing a coin. You're locked into one coin by building a CPU rig. Yes, it has resale value to gamers, but it's much harder to resell a MOBO combo than a bunch of GPUs at any price. Trust me, I've sold hundreds of GPUs and dozens of MOBOs before!
I don't know what the market share of CPUs vs. GPUs on CryptonightR is right now. But if most of the current nethash is made up of CPUs, these CPUs will have no choice but to switch to RandomX when it is out. There's no other coin for them to mine, unless they have some work to do outside of mining. So almost all of them will get onto the RandomX network, too, along with your expensive new CPU rig. I think this'll be the biggest factor driving up difficulty. Yes, the older CPUs might not be as efficient as the new Ryzens, but many of them are already paid for in terms of capital (like in a datacenter) or have free power (like in a botnet or apartment with free power).
You might say that Monero will always be profitable enough because it has survived so long, or the developers are better, or they're taking action against ASICs. But that doesn't necessarily guarantee profit. Monero might be a successful coin and overtake ETH, but that has nothing to do with profit on the network. Even though Bitcoin's really successful, you're guaranteed to lose money if you buy the latest Antminer and run it at residential power rates. Meanwhile, Dogecoin back in the day had awesome profits even though it was a blatant fork of LTC with few improvements.
Your new RandomX rig might look like it has decent "ROI" to you, but that doesn't mean it was the best investment. You might have been better off building a GPU rig and mining Grincoin or Ravencoin. I.E. if you build a RandomX rig, you're earning less profit for the same amount of capital invested. And even if you earn the same return, you still took a higher risk than if you built a GPU rig (see the point above).
In the GPU mining community, I have the feeling that there's a lot of resentment over the 2018 crypto recession and the whole 'ASIC miner invasion'. I think people here are feeling burned over their losses last year and the evil ASIC takeover, and want an opportunity for the little guy to start mining again. So we're falsely seeing the RandomX ray of hope as a floodlight, and getting overexcited. And in general, the ordinary person cannot make a significant, steady profit in the crypto mining industry. The guy who wrote that thread is very rich and even 100 GTX 1080 Ti's cost nothing to him. The reason he became wealthy is because he avoided get-rich-quick gimmicks back in the day (like the dotcom sites) and focused on learning technology for the future. Mining will not make you rich, and especially not RandomX coin tossing. If you love RandomX, build your rig now, keep benchmarking and undervolting and have fun at it. But if you just want profit, wait until RandomX is up and running. And consider all the risks involved with a new algorithm and commercial mining in general. So I hope we can all reconsider whether we're excited about RandomX for the right reasons. Let's try to avoid jumping to conclusions about profitability and hold off on the Newegg 'checkout' button. Will include write-up soon, Newest ETH-Miner release! Let me start this by saying, I mined my first BTC before it was even $100 or well known. BTC Mined. That was my first foray into the PoW mining scene. I had a lot a fun doing so. I enjoy building computers, testing equipment, fixing problems. It's literally my everyday job as an IT Hardware Analyst for a company. I had to put down my mining on GPU dreams due to ASICs overtaking the networks of both BTC and LTC. I gave up on crypto as a hobby. Why bother? I don't want an ASIC in my house. There's no fun in tuning an ASIC, cannot change out components, upgrade it, etc. Then in 2017 I heard a whisper of GPU mineable coin that was ASIC resistant. It was called Ethereum. It was posed to be the next "Apple" with great innovations. At first I was beset by previous failures of GPU mineable coins getting overtaken by ASICs. Eventually with some discussion to my friend we built our first GPU mining rig in June of 2017. I got into Ethereum by mining it. Now ASICs run rampant through most of the top 100 Cryptocurrencies. The current outlook, regardless of the bear-market pricing, looks bleak. I want to appeal to Vitalik, Nick, and the other Ethereum developers. It was GPU miners you had in mind when you created the Ethereum network and not ASICs. Vitalik made the best effort of a ASIC-Resistant algorithm. It latest for years but it's a cat and mouse game. However, this mining algorithm is vulnerable to two forms of centralization. First, the mining ecosystem has come to be dominated by ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits), computer chips designed for, and therefore thousands of times more efficient at, the specific task of Bitcoin mining. This means that Bitcoin mining is no longer a highly decentralized and egalitarian pursuit, requiring millions of dollars of capital to effectively participate in.
In regards to Centralization Mr If, made an excellent argument last Dev meeting, for ProgPoW which I shall reiterate/paraphrase here for everyone on Reddit. PoW is geared towards industries of scale. This is why ASICs typically become the dominate force, because the ASIC manufactures have the capital, investment, and industry to produce them at a low cost. Thus they reap the PoW rewards. Hence why all PoW tends to go towards ASIC. They can decide to sell ASIC and recoup cost plus profit or keep mining with that equipment. Making ASICs egalitarian. ASIC manufactures decide, not the miner communities, what they do with the ASICs. You pay to play and you must be first. ProgPoW takes the same approach but changes who the industry is, instead of Bitmain/Innosilicon it is AMD/Nvidia. These two companies are industrial level manufactures and have the ability to produce on a scale to support PoW(Just look at all the overstock of Nvidia 1000 GPUs). In this sense we are trading one(ASICs) for another (ASIC-GPUs). We as PoW miners must use Nvidia/AMD GPUs to support the network. Because it is the commodity hardware mass available to everyone. ASICs ARE NOT commodity hardware and ARE NOT mass available to everyone. Changing from Eth-hash to ProgPoW changes the players in the game and chooses the lesser two evils (AMD/Nvidia). ProgPoW is not stricitly an Algorithm to replace Eth-hash but a has various "buttons" and "knobs" to tune. hence why its called Programmable! ProgPoW is not strictly an Algo, it is a finite set of basic operations. ProgPoW is to be considered more of a process which creates variants of the algo every specified interval. Due to this there is no concept of ProgPoW as an immutable algo like Eth-hash. It tune-able and can dial various "knobs" that allow the creation of large number "definition sets" which again due to the deterministic randomness create an infinite number of algo changes. ProgPoW creates a new search kernel every 50 blocks. Every 50 . blocks the gpu receives a completely new and different kernel from the previous which causes hashrate to change. In ProgPoW there is no fixed and constant hashrate for GPUs. You have to take into account averages across multiple periods to get the best out of the hardware. Variances are from 8-9%.
I personally supported the Network at $400, $180, $1400 and still support it now $100. I supported throughout the uncertainty of the Iceage and delays. Ethereum is still a PoW coin! ONE OF THE BEST! It's what made ethereum great! The project has excellent idea's of smart contracts and Dapps. On top of all is a massive GPU networking supporting it. Throughout 2017 there were no ASICs(That we know of) yet the ethereum network grew. What helped make Ethereum blossom was the miners and the mining community. I am personally invested into Ethereum want to see it succeed, I'm personally invested in PoW GPU mining, and want to see it succeed. I will invest my own time and money, being a GPU miner, into seeing that ProgPoW testnet gets fully scrutinized, put through it's paces to ensure that it is a fit for Ethereum and minimize problems. I plead, beg, and invite all other GPU miners to do so. If we want change we as miners must show through hashpower on the testnet, that we are pushing forward with ProgPoW. Throw a single GPU, a Rig, whatever you can spare or muster for ProgPoW testnet. I can and am more than willing to help anyone setup the necessary files, miners, etc needed to get mining on the test network. Operating that GPU is a typically an enthusiast, hobby miner, and a believer in Crypto. *Edit:*PoW is the known best way to distribute token "fairly", yet everyone hates it and wants PoS? What happens when large ASIC manufacture and centralized parties mining with ASICs earn more tokens than anyone else? Wouldn't that lead to centralization in PoS? Ethereum is on PoW BECAUSE it needs it! And because Ethereum needs PoW, it needs GPU miners, and to stay decentralized to PoS and in PoS it needs to keep GPUs miners on board. Vitalik, Nick, and others, a time-line needs to be set, ProgPoW needs to be in the Agenda continually, discussed throughly, until it's launched on the main network. PSA for those considering getting into LTC mining now
Judging by the sudden increase of posts on this subreddit and the scarcity of gfx cards there are a large number of people about to jump into LTC mining. Please people, do your homework before you drop any serious cash on a new mining rig. Sites such as bitcoinwisdom.com have an excellent calculator for working out return on investment for all sorts of cards. The key thing here is to ensure that you use something realistic for the difficulty increment. The last two difficulty increases have been above 13%. With the number of people getting into mining now there is no reason to expect the next increase to be any lower. This means that currently a $250 7950 will never be profitable mining LTC at current market values. Neither will a lot of other cards available at normal prices today. If you do decide to jump into mining, please be aware that you are betting on either LTC value increasing (and it seems to have stablized... for now), or decreasing in difficulty (unlikely). Unless you already have the hardware, just make sure that you can live without the chunk of cash you are considering spending on a mining rig, or at least consider what alternative uses there are if LTC doesn't pan out for you. Obviously if you already have the hardware, or are rich enough not to care, then you don't need this advice. Just don't assume that rushing out to buy 5 over-priced r290x cards will instantly result in profit... it may end up costing you quite a lot in the short-term before you start to realise any profits. You might need to be in this for the long haul.

ETC 51% attack, a nightmare for small altcoins As a top 20 crypto asset, Ethereum Classic is not seen as an easy target for a 51 percent attack, and yet in early January, its blockchain was successfully hijacked for several days with estimated losses of $1.1 million. This attack has caused many people to panic, as the small PoW consensus coins are vulnerable to 51 attacks. Luckily ETC has not been stunned by the 51 attack, after a short fall in prices, ETC quickly created a new record of the highest price.

PlusToken may be driving down the price of Bitcoin In July, Chinese media reported that the PlusToken scam attracted over 3 billion worth of cryptocurrency. Six individuals connected to PlusToken were arrested in June. The stolen funds have continued to move through wallets and be cashed out through the independent OTC brokers operating mostly on the Huobi platform. It has been speculated that PlusToken sccammers didn’t just steal $2+ billion worth of cryptocurrency. They may also be driving down the price of bitcoin.
The second halving of Litecoin Litecoin (LTC) has experienced an event that is designated to happen once in four years: the halving of the block rewards. On Aug. 5, 2019, Litecoin rewards for producing a block were halved from 25 LTC to 12.5 LTC. A co-founder of one of the largest mining pools, F2Pool, stated on Weibo that, given the electricity costs of 0.26 yuan ($0.037) per kilowatt per hour, some mining rigs like L3+ could close their business right away.

Litecoin Halving Aug 2019 Litecoin Halving is quite similar to Bitcoin Halving, for example, its motive, the underlying process, and many more. But first, what is Litecoin Halving and why are some people fearing it? Litecoin Halving is the halving of miner reward which is done to limit (indirectly) the supply of the crypto and hence reduce the inflation rate in the market. The supply reduces indirectly as there are less number of newly generated coins that flow in the crypto market. When the miners are rewarded, they sell their reward (newly generated coins), so as to equalise their expenditure on the mining process (mining rigs, electricity consumption, etc). Even though there's a limit to LTC's supply (84 mil), the inflation creeps in somehow and therefore to avoid that, the reward is reduced by 50%. This process occurs after every 840,000 blocks are mined, which is roughly four years, just like with BTC. The reward of mining Litecoin will become 12.5 LTC from 25 LTC after its halving. There is a general fear among some people regarding this whole halving ordeal. But worry not, as this will actually improve the Litecoin market. What is ProgPoW? Why Ethereum needs it moving forward.
Update: ASIC Manufacture say they can make a ProgPoW ASIC Disclosure, I'm a avid GPU miner with some 90 Nvidia GPUs running out of my garage. I've been in and out of the mining scene since 2011,2014, and recently 2017. I Hold BTC, ETH, RVN. I directly benefit from them moving to ProgPOW, but not without a good reason. Everytime I've gotten into home GPU mining ASICs comes out BTC, LTC, I've had to give up every time. I refuse to see it happen to another excellent coin. I've been a proponent of Ethereum following there ASIC resistance stance outlined in the original white-paper. Now that ProgPOW has been given the "Green-light" by Hudson Jameson to move forward with ProgPOW. I really think its time to discuss the Algorithm. What it is, who created it, why Ethereum needs it and dismiss crazy theories such as Nvidia funding development. ProgPoW is a proof-of-work algorithm designed to close the efficency gap available to specialized ASICs. It utilizes almost all parts of commodity hardware (GPUs), and comes pre-tuned for the most common hardware utilized in the Ethereum network.
From reading the white paper listed on Github the main idea behind ProgPOW is NOT to achieve total ASIC-resistance. The idea is to kill the 50-1000x Efficiency gains from specialized ASIC hardware. Such as what we saw recently with Equihash 200/9 coins where 50x was achieved over GPUs. ProgPOW algorithm uses most of the GPU minus a few parts. It takes the original Eth-Hash algorithm and add more features. The main elements of the algorithm are:
Changes keccak_f1600 (with 64-bit words) to keccak_f800 (with 32-bit words) to reduce impact on total power
Increases mix state.
Adds a random sequence of math in the main loop.
Adds reads from a small, low-latency cache that supports random addresses.
Increases the DRAM read from 128 bytes to 256 bytes.
ProgPOW will Inherit Eth-Hash current DAG size meaning 2GB and 3GB will not be able to mine still. Additionally no advantage is given to Either Nvidia or AMD GPUs
ProgPoW has been designed to be a vendor-neutral proof-of-work, or more specifically, proof-of-GPU. ProgPoW has intentionally avoided using features that only one core architecture has, such as LOP3 on NVIDIA, or indexed register files on AMD.
According to Kristy, she has had direct contact with AMD and Nvidia on testing ProgPOW.
As part of its review process, ProgPoW was submitted to (and reviewed by) both AMD and NVIDIA engineers. This does not mean one side is favored over the other. She's giving and getting input from the major GPU manufactures in order to support Crypto-mining. Additionally she says "AMD is actively working with us to optimize ProgPoW for their architectures.". Using ProgPOW optimized for GPUs rids us of bowing to Bitmain, innosilicon, halong and there scandalous ways for hardware. ProgPOW IS NOT the "God-sent savior of all GPUS" Even Kristy understand that complete ASIC-resistance is a fallacy. This will never be achieved. However By working with GPU manufactures and Crypto Dev's we can make a coin where GPUs run along-side with ASICs, but the efficiency gains are diluted. Meaning the time and money invested into an ProgPOW ASIC machine does not make economical sense. Rather just buy the actual GPU. Quote sources from Kristy's Medium article. It's too much to cover here but in short why we need ProgPOW against current ASICs and future ASICs At his point in time we actually don't need ProgPOW. However we do need it as time goes on. Early Bitcoin ASICs didn't dominate BTC however as time went on, they became better more efficient than GPUs, and started dominating BTC's network. The same fate happens to any "ASIC-Resistant coin" that decides it's not a big deal (looking at you ZEN). Without a set date on POS Ethereum would have suffered the same fate. As Siacoin Dev states;

What makes ASICs bad? Isn't it better to get Hash/watt ratio? This saves tons of electric. One of PoW biggest faults. I think there is nothing bad about the ASICs hardware. Equihash ASICs achieved 20 1080ti level hashrate at 1/20 of the power. That's impressive. The problem with ASIC hardware is who, where it comes from, and there shady business practices.

I've heard a lot that ASICs aren't all that big of a deal. Focus on POS. Take in account Siacoins own network hashrate which allowed bitmain/innosilicon ASICs on the network till they forked in favor of their own ASICs after just a year (Siacoins drops 96% network hashrate).

GPU manufactures would not and cannot be do the same.
ASICs destroy networks, centralize the pools, and hardware. Leading to them to be controlled by large entity in this case its Chinese companies. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fool. Of course this doesn't happen overnight, hence my original statement that we don't need ProgPoW now. In a years time that may totally change and it will be far to late. GPUs allow anyone to support the network. Think of the crypto run-up. Fry's Electronics, Microceneter, online E-tailers were SOLD OUT OF GPUs. Think of that! People were buying GPUs to support the network for token rewards(worth money) How many new miners, people, got interested in crypto because of this? How about friends who saw the rigs and word of mouth spread that you could go out buy a graphics card, built a rig, and earn money? obviously we know the effects because it wasn't sustainable in the remotest. However it's an attest that GPU mineable coins makes it accessible to everyone. For Ethereum to successfully go POS it cannot hand it network over to ASIC mining companies in the meantime. POS is on an unknown release date/timeframe. I understand Vitalk does not like PoW however that's what currently securing the network. Because of this Ethereum must maintain as much decentralization as possible with GPU mining. This is what ProgPOW does. It gives AMD and Nvidia GPUs the advantage they need over ASICs created by Bitmain or others. It allows me to continue to secure the Ethereum network with my 90 GPUs until full POS switch. Conclusion Did it have to be ProgPOW? No, as UBIQ has shown they created there own unique ASIC-resistant algorithm. ProgPOW was given to us by the Ifdefelse team completed. This required no work from the ETH devs at all. It's open source and has been reviewed by the Etheruem Dev team. If they haven't found any issues with it yet, I don't see why we cannot implement it. An argument can be made that if we do switch we risk security, because we'll lose network hashrate and decrease the cost to attack the network. I have two things to say to that. One since ProgPOW is new, Nicehash has not added it to it's network to rent yet. I wouldn't know how long nicehash would take to it add it, but it gives us a short while to get people on new ETH POW network. Additionally to attack the network, they would need massive coordination from GPU mining farms. Such a thing has never been recorded. The 51% attacks that have happened recently (BCD/BTG/ZEN) and as of 1/8/18, ETC. These were all ASIC mineable coins. In the case of equihash coins, an ASIC that achieved 50x more efficiency had just came to market. It's not proven, but it leads me to believe a bad actor with early access to ASICs was able to attack those coins. All except ZEN have switched to Zhash algorithm. Even ZCASH/Zelcash has funded ProgPOW development. While I disagree they should do this, because that's entirely the problem too many coins using too many of the same algorithm, in the end it's up to the devs.
TL:DR; ASIC-Resistance is futile and a fallacy. PoS or other solutions are needed but to get there we need to keep PoW as Decentralized as possible this is what ProgPOW does.
